“THE CREATIVE ACT: a way of being” by Rick Rubin
I met Rick Rubin for the first time while I was watching “The shop”, specifically the episode about hip hop artists. I noticed right away his calm presence, the luminosity in his eyes. Rick was present, and he exuded enlightenment.
Only when I told my husband about Rick, I found out how successful he was. In that show, he did not brag at all about him.
The second time I saw Rick’s name was on the cover of the latest album of Imagine Dragons.
This is why I searched online about Rick Rubin and bought his book “THE CREATIVE ACT” right away. According to Rick, the above story shows my own creativity.
“Creativity is not a rare ability.
Creativity is a fundamental aspect of being human.
And it’s for all of us.”
I genuinely believed Rick’s words and felt that Rick spoke to me directly.
“Flaws are human, and the attraction of art is the humanity held in it.
If we were machinelike, the art wouldn’t resonate. It would be soulless.
We’re all different and we’re all imperfect, and the imperfections are what makes each of us and our work interesting.
We create pieces reflective of who we are, and if insecurity is part of who we are, then our work will have a greater degree of truth in it as a result.”
How we express our creativity is unique because we are unique.
This is a fact that I have come to accept only recently.
“The making of art is not a competitive act.
Our work is representative of the self.”
P.S. Rick confessed to Paul McCartney in the miniseries “3,2,1” that he decided to learn to meditate when he found out, at fourteen years old, that the Beatles were practicing it. No wonder that I saw Rick’s luminosity.
